Mediation is a process in which a neutral third party guides the parties to an acceptable solution.  The reasons why mediation has a high success rate include:

- Communications, which have often broken down between the parties, can be re-established through the Mediator;

- Misunderstandings can be clarified;

- The Mediator can provide an impartial view on strengths and weaknesses to each party, which is often very persuasive (it is impossible to be impartial when you are on one side or the other);

- The Mediator can help "bridge the gap";

- Because the parties avoid the cost of court or arbitration, they can contribute some or all of that amount to the solution;

- Mediation is confidential;

- Relationships can be preserved (unlike after a protracted lawsuit).

- The mediation process is entirely voluntary and final settlements are binding
